THINGS TO DO IN GOA
It is no secret that Goa has beautiful sandy beaches fringed by palm trees, with the Arabian Sea lapping gently at its shores. What many people don't know is that there is so much more. Just a couple of kilometres inland is a whole landscape is waiting to be discovered. Rivers, lakes and waterfalls with fresh, cool water. Lush forests and wildlife sanctuaries, home to many species of birds and animals. Grasslands and hills. Paddy fields and jungles.
400 years of Portuguese rule has left a fascinating legacy which can be seen in the architecture, language, culture and lifestyle. Deserted and silent churches attract thousands of pilgrims every year, as do the temples nestling in the hills.
This lingering old world charm combines with modern Indian life to create an atmosphere not found anywhere else in the country. Because of this uniqueness, Goa is an increasingly popular holiday destination, attracting people from all over the world.
For those looking for adventure and fun, there are excellent water sports, boat trips and diverse activities such as go-karting and elephant riding. If you have always wanted to try scuba diving or snorkelling, Goa's islands offer superb coral and fish life.
If bird watching is your hobby, you've reached paradise! Does practising yoga during sunrise and sleeping in an Indian tent appeal to you? How about trying traditional Indian massage and rejuvenation therapies at an Ayurvedic Spa?
If you have money burning holes in your pocket, there is an abundant choice of shops and stalls selling clothes, jewellery and handicrafts from all over India. Good buys are gold, leather and silks.
The weekly flea market in Anjuna is well worth a visit and the Saturday Night Bazaar in Arpora has become quite a cult with its ethnic food stalls and varied entertainment.
The local markets are colourful, bustling places for those wanting to stock up on spices and Indian sweets. Panjim has a good range of brand name shops and some recently opened lifestyle stores have some good bargains. If you still have money to spare, the casinos would be more than happy to part you from it!
Eating out in Goa is a subject which deserves a website all of its own. Goan cuisine is unique as it has absorbed so many different influences over the years. There are restaurants specialising in authentic Goan food and these sit happily alongside seafood, Indian, Chinese, French and Italian eating places. Add to these Turkish, Israeli, Thai, Greek, Tapas and Organic Vegetarian and your only problem is going to be where to eat next!
The nightlife really revolves around the hotels, bars and restaurants, although there are karaoke bars and discos for those looking for them.
