INTRODUCTION TO INDIA

North India

India is a vast country and a veritable pot pourri of races, religions, cultures and languages. To show you North India in its entirety is well beyond our scope, but let us give you a glimpse of this diverse and fascinating land.

First of all, Delhi – a city which will enrich you with its history, surprise you with its wide open spaces, entice you with its restaurants and ultimately stimulate you with its vibrancy. You cannot leave Delhi until you have marvelled at the Red Fort or jostled with the crowds in the Chandni Chowk bazaar.

Journeying across Rajasthan will unleash an artist's palette of colours. Imagine deserts, dusty villages, abandoned Rajput forts, quiet dignified people, colourful turbans, wandering peacocks.

Prepare for an assault on your senses once you reach Jaipur. This 'Jewel in the Desert', with its forts and palaces of legendary leaders, still conjures up images of romance and gallantry of a bygone era. Rare treasures from Jaipur's royal past give a fascinating insight into the life of the Maharajahs. It is also famous for its arts and crafts, both traditional and modern, and has become a shopper's paradise.

Agra – no words can do justice to the magnificence of the Taj Mahal. A king's monument of grief is now a wonder of the modern world. It is proof of one of the most beautiful love stories of all times and few who visit can come away untouched by its haunting beauty and serene aura.

South India

In total contrast to the deserts and bright colours of Rajasthan, lies Kerala: a green paradise of unspoilt coastline, cool hills, paddy fields and tranquil backwaters.

The commercial capital of Cochin is the first port of call for visitors, as it has been for sailors for hundreds of years. The natural harbour and friendly people have made it a safe haven for seafarers and a place for fair trade. Fort Cochin, built by the Portuguese, watches over the busy harbour where ferries laden with housewives, school children and office goers bustle between the islands. A spectacular sight along the shore is the famous Chinese fishing nets. Cochin has a fascinating history which will unfold as you visit the oldest church in India and the deserted Jew town.

Cruising the backwaters gives you a chance to see how important the rivers are to the people living on the banks as they fish, wash, play and use them as transport. You will feel transported in time as you are waited on hand and foot and look forward to what awaits you round the next bend. Hill stations were popular places for the British to escape to during the hot summer months. Today, many of them are wildlife sanctuaries where you get the chance to see animals in their natural habitat.
