The average daily hours of sunshine in summer is 9-10 hours and 3-5 hours during the monsoon.
Time Difference. 5½ hours ahead during UK winter months and 4½ during summer months.
Health. Certain health risks may be present in India. Seek health advice from your own doctor 2 months before departure for recommended precautions.
Language. The national language is Konkani but English is widely spoken as is Hindi and Portuguese.
Banks and Currency. The local currency in India is the rupee, which must be bought locally. We therefore suggest you take travellers cheques which can be exchanged in your hotel or in local resorts. Always exchange money through an authorised bank or money changer, insist on a receipt and retain them all. Remember to re-convert unspent money before departure from India.
Food and Drink. Goan food is delicately spiced and full of exotic local ingredients. Seafood is a speciality. Dining out is excellent value for money and there are a good choice of restaurants serving international cuisine. We recommend you drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. Buy bottled water and avoid ice in drinks.
Taxis and Tourist Cars. Look for the Tourist taxis which are approved by the Department of Tourism, Government of India. Negotiate the fare before setting off. These vehicles can be hired cheaply for the entire day, if you wish to explore further afield. A ride in an auto rickshaw taxi is also an experience not to be missed.
Tipping. This is widely expected for most services, with 10% as a guideline. Don't encourage beggars by giving them money.
Dress Code. Casual. Long trousers/skirts and covered shoulders would be essential if visiting places of worship, especially in North and South India. North India can be quite cold during the winter months, so please bear this in mind when packing.
Electricity/Voltage. 220 – 240 V. A continental adaptor is recommended.
